Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Talks over Phone with Hoshyar Zebari, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Iraqi Governing Council

On the evening of July 8, 2004, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing held a telephone conversation with Hoshyar Zebari, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Iraqi Governing Council. Li Zhaoxing expressed hopes that with the assistance of the international community, the Iraqi Governing Council will stabilize security in Iraq as early as possible so as to proceed with its reconstruction comprehensively. He said that China supports the work of the Iraqi Governing Council and stands ready to further develop the friendly cooperation with Iraq on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit. Li Zhaoxing also notified Zebari of the decision of China to reopen its embassy in Iraq.

Zebari thanked the Chinese government for its support for the Iraqi Governing Council and its important role in the Security Council of the United Nations, saying that he would take measures to ensure the security of Chinese diplomats in Iraq. Zebari stressed that Iraq would like to establish friendly and cooperative relations with China and welcomes Chinese enterprises to participate comprehensively in the reconstruction of Iraq.
