2024-10-10 18:00

On October 10, 2024, Chinese Ambassador to Syria Shi Hongwei met with UNHCR Representative in Syria Gonzalo Vargas Llosa to exchange views on the Lebanon-Israel conflict and refugee issues.

Gonzalo said that the recent escalation of the Lebanon-Israel conflict has caused a large number of refugees to pour into Syria from Lebanon, triggering a serious humanitarian crisis, and UNHCR has done a lot of work to resettle refugees. As a permanent member of the Security Council, China has long been committed to humanitarian relief work, we thank China for its strong support for the work of the United Nations. UNHCR is willing to coordinate and cooperate closely with China to improve the humanitarian situation in Syria.

Shi Hongwei said that China opposes violations of the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Syria and Lebanon, and is deeply concerned about the escalation of tensions in the region and the large-scale displacement of civilians caused by the escalation of conflict. The influx of refugees has exacerbated Syria's already fragile humanitarian situation. China supports the work done by the Syrian government and the United Nations to deal with the refugee issue, and is willing to work with the international community to contribute to alleviating the humanitarian situation in Syria.
