On April 20, 2026, Chinese Ambassador to Syria Shi Hongwei met with Claudio Cordone, Deputy Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria, and exchanged views on the situation in Syria and the region. Shi Hongwei stated that China supports the Syrian people in independently choosing a development path that serves their own interests, commends the continued humanitarian operations of UN agencies in Syria, and supports the Office of the Special Envoy in providing assistance to the Syrian side in combating terrorism, protecting the rights of ethnic minorities, and accelerating recovery and reconstruction. China follows the regional situation with great concern; President Xi Jinping recently put forward a four-point proposal on safeguarding and promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, and China stands ready to work with the United Nations to continue playing a constructive role in easing the regional tensions. Cordone thanked the Chinese side for its support for the work of the United Nations, particularly the Office of the Special Envoy, commended China's role as a responsible major power, and expressed willingness to work closely with the Chinese side to help Syria and the region achieve security, stability, and development. |
